The Mastodon is a fully automatic 2016 Nerf N-Strike Elite Mega blaster that is able to hold up to 24 Elite Mega Darts in a three-piece integrated drum. The Mastodon is the largest Nerf blaster by far, and is the heaviest because of that. The weapon comes with a shoulder strap, 24 Elite Mega Darts, instructions, the carry handle and the blaster itself. When released, the blaster retailed for 79.99 USD, and got good reviews when it first came out, though these reviews were hurt by a few factors. Six "D"-batteries are required to power the Mastodon, and it claims ranges of up to a hundred feet.

Description[]

The Mastodon has a gray pistol grip with black accents, a red body, a grey or orange trigger depending on whether the country's toy safety regulations, and the Nerf logo embossed on the rear. The blaster has an acceleration trigger, indicating that this blaster runs on flywheels. A big white textured "MEGA" is seen on the body, along with an orange barrel, an orange wireframe-like device and a place for the included carry handle to clip into on the left hand side of the blaster. On the left hand side of the blaster as well, there is a red jam door, which when pulled back, allows one to clear potentially tough to reach jams in the blaster.

Internals[]

MastodonInternals

The Mastodon's internals are standard for a blaster like this. It has springs, gears, wires, a massive direct plunger and two massive flywheels.

Position in Theme[]

The Mastodon acts as the heavy machine gun in the lineup.

Blaster Co-relation[]

There are not too many blasters that one can compare the Mastodon to, due to its impressive size; the closest blaster one can compare it to is the Rhino-Fire, a sentry-like blaster but did not have a carry strap or a physical pistol grip for one to hold.

Faults[]

Like most other blasters, the Mastodon has faults. One of the major faults is the price tag; 79.99 USD is out of the reach of most Nerfers. Add the cost of 6 D-sized batteries to the mix, and you have a 100 USD monster. Another fault is the blaster's massive size and weight; because the weapon is so big and bulky, the weapon is very unwieldy and very difficult to hold and use, especially for younger Nerfers. While the included bandolier does help with carrying the weapon, the Mastodon is still extremely hefty.

How to Fire[]

Step 1 - Load the batteries into the blaster.
Step 2 - Load twenty four darts into the drum.
Step 3 - Hold down the acceleration trigger to rev the flywheels, then pull the trigger once to fire a dart, or hold it down to launch darts continuously.

Trivia[]

  • The Mastodon is the first blaster to have both flywheels and a direct plunger.
    • This is also why the Mastodon is so heavy.
